What is the difference between a student who fails a WAEC exam and a student who gets low grades?

The students who fail exams usually lack motivation and try to study less or even give up studying altogether. On the other hand, those who get low grades tend to focus only on their studies without taking into account the importance of time management.

  • Forgetting to read the syllabus

It is important to note that the syllabus contains information regarding the types of questions that are likely to appear in the exam. Students should therefore study thoroughly.

Students often fail to realize that they are writing essays. They tend to focus too much on the topic and forget to organize their ideas properly.

If students have studied all the topics covered in the syllabus. They should also take their time to review the materials prior to the examination.

  • Not knowing the timetable

Students should not only know the timetable but they should also plan ahead by doing revisions before the examination. They should also set aside dedicated time to study and revise. This will help them manage their time well so that they don’t end up wasting it.

  • Willingness to cheat

When students don't prepare, they wound up cheating or relying on a friend to help during the examination. The last thing you want to do is cheat or be caught cheating during an exam like WAEC. You may be disqualified to continue writing the exam or your results seized altogether. Also, you don't want to deal with the shame of your colleagues referring to you as the guy who was caught cheating during their final examinations. Therefore, in your own interest, study hard and get extra tutorials on subjects you find difficult.

  • Lacking preparation

In order to avoid surprises in the examination hall, you should give enough time to prepare for the West African School Certificate Examination. Students who devote their spare time to studying will find that they perform better in exam hall than those who don’t. Focus more of your time preparing on subjects you find difficult so you can have a hang on them before the examination day.

  • Failing to prepare for examinations

Students often fail to study adequately for the exams they take in secondary school because they don’t realize the importance of it. They spend most of their time playing games or doing social media. The result is that many end up cramming without knowing if what they are studying has any relevance at all to the subject they will be taking for the exam. This could lead to them receiving a lower grade than they deserve. Adequate preparation is key to passing your WAEC examination.

  • Making careless errors in answering questions

Most students make one or two mistakes per examination paper but may spend hours looking for them. This could mean they miss out on opportunities to improve their scores. To avoid this problem, I recommend starting each question by reading it all through once and then marking key words. If you find any mistakes after the first read, you should correct them before moving on.

  • Ignoring Instructions

Students often ignore instructions provided by the examiner because of anxiety or they feel it isn’t worth spending time on. While some may also be too confident not to read the exam instructions, this mistake could make you lose crucial marks or sometimes fail the subject. You should read the instructions carefully when you are about to start any of the subjects to understand what is required of you.

  • Not Referencing Past Questions

Past questions have proven to help students in any kind of examination. Because the school syllabuses hardly change, you can expect to have past questions repeated verbatim or sometimes recrafted. Getting familiar with past questions will increase your chances of passing your WAEC examination.
